Refugees in the Aegean islands estimated at over 16,000

156 new arrivals in the past 24 hours

There has been a significant increase in the tide of refugees to Greece’s eastern Aegean islands, with 156 new arrivals in the last 24 hours alone, raising the figure of migrants to 16,021.

Analytically, 61 people landed on the shores of Lesvos, raising the total number of refugees awaiting entrance into Europe to 6,082.  In Chios, the figure climbed to 4,165 following the arrival of 16 new refugees, while Samos reported a figure of 2,695 following an influx of 79 people.  On Leros there are currently a total of 796 refugees, Kos 1,965, Kalymnos 6, Rhodes 236 and Megisti 76.

With the exception of the island of Leros, all the refugee camps are functioning at overcapacity.
