Eerie scene of spider webs across large areas in Aitoliko, western Greece (photos)

It was at least 300 metres long

The locals in the town of Aitoliko in western Greece woke up to quite an extraordinary scene on Monday reminiscent to the Hobbit trilogy, when they came across a vast expanse of greenery covered completely in cobwebs.
The inhabitants of the town observed the rare phenomenon on the eastern side of the lagoon, just before a bridge, where a huge veil of spiders had covered the plants (palm trees and herbaceous vegetation) with a web at least 300 meters long.
The inhabitants speak of an unprecedented phenomenon, noting that in the last few days clusters of mosquitoes have appeared, which might explain the sudden rise in the number of spiders.
