Despite their large size and threatening appearance, basking sharks are not aggressive and are harmless to humans

A basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) measuring 7.5 meters and weighing about 2 tons was caught by a fisherman in Plomari, Lesvos, on Monday.

The shark was caught in the open sea and was transferred to the port. The coast guard was notified immediately and officials went to the spot. The shark will be cut and sold.

The basking shark is the second largest living fish, after the whale shark, and is cosmopolitan migratory species, found in all the world’s temperate oceans. Despite their large size and threatening appearance, basking sharks are not aggressive and are harmless to humans.
