Injured horse left to die by Roma – Who’ll help? (Pics)

Horse in a state of distress, but local authorities appear unprepared or unwilling to help

An injured horse lies distressed in the yard of an abandoned plant in Ioannina, NW Greece. Unhelped, with an open wound, the animal had been lying in the heat in dire straits until the animal shelter of Ioannina (www.zoosos.gr) was informed. The animal appears to be suffering as its right leg has been slashed.

According to a resident, the animal had been left behind by a group of Roma (gypsies) who had camped the area. Seeing the animal crawling around the abandoned building, neighbors left it food and water but found that though the animal can stand, it can’t walk and is in danger of developing colic, which is life-threatening to horses.

The Regional Veterinary Department was called to help, but an official from the department said the service was not in a position to help as the animal is without an owner. The municipality of Ioannina was also informed of the animal’s condition but showed indifference. Even private veterinarians did not respond to the animal shelter’s calls.

Euthanasia seems the most likely future for the animal that is suffering. If you can help the animal shelter, call 697267555.
