Archaeologists clash over Tutankhamun’s secret burial chambers

Former antiquities minister and famed Egyptologist Zahi Hawass rejected the theory

Newsroom May 9 03:20

Archaeologists have clashed at a conference in Cairo, Egypt, over whether or not there could be secret burial chambers behind the walls of King Tutankhamun’s tomb.

Speaking at the conference, former antiquities minister and famed Egyptologist Zahi Hawass rejected the theory that there are hidden chambers behind the tomb and could contain the tomb of Queen Nefertiti, one of pharaonic Egypt’s most famous figures.

“In all my career … I have never come across any discovery in Egypt due to radar scans,” Hawass said.

However, British Egyptologist Nicolas Reeves believes there could be hidden chambers behind the walls and they are possibly containing the tomb of Queen Nefertiti.

“If I’m right in my understanding of reading of the evidence to suggest there may be a burial of Nefertiti behind the north wall, surely that’s worth going the extra mile,” Reeves stated. “But you know, I haven’t got a crystal ball, I don’t know, I don’t know what the future holds in store.”
