Some top security prisons are so dangerous that even the guards dare not enter. The ‘Penas Ciudad Barrios’ is a maximum security prison in El Salvador, but unlike other corrective facilities this is off limits for the authorities. It is run by the notorious ‘Mara Salvatrucha’ gang, infamous for its merciless revenge and cruel retribution. London photographer Adam Hinton risked his life and took some portraits of the members of the gang who run the prison. “It was built for 800 inmates and now houses over 2,500. The prison is practically run internally by the gang who have organized a bakery, basic rehabilitation and are even left to run the hospital”, said Hinton.
