EU Commission prepares emergency plan to avoid humanitarian crisis in Greece

It is estimated that about 25,000 refugees and migrants are currently in Greece

The European Commission is making contingency plans to deal with a potential humanitarian crisis in Greece, European Commission spokesperson Natasha Bertaud said on Friday.

“At this time we are preparing an emergency plan, ‘a humanitarian aid mechanism’ in order to avoid a humanitarian crisis in Greece,” she said.

It is estimated that about 25,000 refugees and migrants are currently in Greece, while daily arrivals are between 2,000-3,000, she said.

Mrs. Bertaud also hailed a promise by Greek Defence Minister Panos Kammenos to have an additional 20,000 temporary hospitality places ready in northern Greece over the weekend.
