German media on Greek crisis biased, German study finds

Projection of reporters' personal views was prevalent, study shows

Newsroom September 8 12:42

The German public received a biased view on the Greek crisis in 2015, according to a study published in German newspaper ‘Suddeutsche Zeitung’. The study, conducted by the Otto Brenner Institute, revealed that many German media outlets failed to report objectively on the Greek crisis, with television journalists often projecting their own personal views and subjective opinions on the issue. The findings of the study, which focused on news bulletins and political shows aired on ‘Tagesschau’ and ‘Heute’, as well as special programs about the Greek crisis shown on ‘Brennpunkt’ and ‘ZDF’, revealed that the majority of participants asked believed they did not receive a balanced picture of the crisis in 2015. As ‘Suddeutsche Zeitung’ reports, the scientists involved in the study concluded that the news coverage of the Greek crisis by German media was unbalanced and superficial.
