Government plans new property surcharge

Fines could be up to 20,000 Euros for false declaration

The Greek government plans to burden taxpayers with a new property surcharge called ‘Building Identity’. The Ministry for Environment has included the new provision in its draft bill that has been presented for public discussion till September 22. The tax is expected to start from 400 Euros and will require the approval of a professional engineer. The plan is for every citizen to have registered and paid the cost over the next five years, according to a report by newspaper Eleftheros Typos. Owners of all structures will be compelled to pay the new surcharge, while the engineer responsible for signing off on the document will have to renew it after a 7 years. Fines for declaring false data will range between 2,000 and 20,000 Euros, while penalties could include the engineer losing their licence.
