Gov’t prepares to evacuate Idomeni and create new centers for 30,000 refugees

The government will try again to inform the refugees and immigrants so as to accept to be transferred to refugee shelters throughout Greece

Newsroom March 25 10:47

By announcing the creation of new centers to host about 30,000 more immigrants and refugees in mainland Greece within the next 20 days , the Greek government admits the failure of the implementation of EU-Turkey agreement which was signed on March 18.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting of Government Refugee and Migration Policy Council, the spokesman of the coordinating committee for refugees, Giorgos Kyritsis, announced the above data and made special reference to Idomeni stressing that the government will try again to inform the refugees and immigrants so as to accept to be transferred to refugee shelters throughout Greece.

Mr. Kiritsis also said that the state can transfer 2,000 people from Idomeni in existing refugee centers, while he estimated that as of March 28, this number could be doubled.
According to information, starting from tomorrow the government will send buses to Idomeni hoping that refugees and immigrants after being well informed on the situation to accept to leave the area and be transferred to refugee centers.

Responding to journalists’ questions, Mr. Kyristis said that there is still no final decision on strengthening asylum service, while he acknowledged that, although the agreement foresees European observers to arrive in Greece by March 28, so as to speed up asylum procedures, no one has come yet.
