Merkel may face revolt by 100 German MPs on Greek debt write-off

A tough battle for German Chancellor Angela Merkel to convince her MPs to soften their approach on Greece

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has a rebellion on her hands as more than 100 German MPs threatened to revolt unless she remains firm in her demands to block a huge debt write-off as a new bailout plan for Greece.

German conservatives are taking the side of Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble who believes that the “honest and consequent approach” would be to let Greece leave the eurozone, something that Merkel is against.

An opinion poll on Wednesday showed a 3.5% increase in the popularity of the German conservatives, but not for Merkel’s policies.
