Main opposition New Democracy expressed its deep sadness on Friday for the refugees and migrants who drowned in recent boat sinkings in the Aegean, whose number has risen to 42.

“This drama cannot continue. The refugee-migrant issue is primarily a humanitarian issue, but at the same time a security issue. The Aegean cannot continue to be a vast graveyard, neither can our country be a vast camp of trapped refugees and migrants,” ND said in a press release.

“European support and solidarity must be continuous and practical. We all need to recognize that Turkey must implement without delay, the commitments it has taken on both towards Greece and towards the European Union,” ND noted, adding that Europe should understand that Greece can neither bear the weight nor tackle a problem of such scale alone.
