Major opposition party leader of New Democracy (ND) Evangelos Meimarakis returned the mandate, Monday morning, he received from Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos Friday, after failed attempts (something totally expected) to form a coalition government from the current political groups in the Greek parliament. Speaking to reporters after the meeting with the Greek President, he said Tsipras was leading the country to distaster.
Meimarakis is using harsh rhetoric against Greek PM Alexis Tsipras, holding him solely responsible for dragging the country to elections amid a faltering economy and political instability due to his failure in the negotiations with the EU creditors. The leader of New Democracy aims to deconstruct the political profile of the Greek PM and exploit the internal divisions within the leftist SYRIZA party. Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos will hand over the mandate to newly formed left ‘Popular Unity’ party led by former SYRIZA MP Panayiotis Lafazanis.
