Norman Atlantic: Investigations continue with fires still burning

The garage will give clues as to what may have caused the fire

Italian firefighters wearing gas masks boarded the charred Norman Atlantic ferry on Sunday to retrieve a data recorder in efforts to find out what caused a deadly blaze. They tried to put out more blazes caused by oxygen and entered in areas of the ship following its arrival to Brindisi. A similar effort took place on Saturday but the team was unable to open the garage door because of ongoing fires.

Prosecutor Ettore Cardinali is coordinating the investigation. “We’re still at a phase of secondary importance,” he said. Mr. Cardinali stayed on the charred ship for five hours on Saturday however he was not among the team who went aboard on Sunday. He told representatives of the Greek embassy in Rome that he would seek the help of Greek authorities in finding the cause of the tragic accident.
