Government officials said that the fuss created over German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble’s comment on Greek economy was unnecessary.
During the joint conference between Mr Schaeuble and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras at the World Economic Forum in Davos, he said that “If we want to make Europe stronger, then we should implement what we agreed to implement. We could just say implementation, stupid,” he said.
Even though, Mr. Schaeuble did not name Alexis Tsipras, it was obvious that he referred to him. But, according to a senior government source, everyone knew to whom he addressed, but the prime minister was not offended at all.
“Besides, everyone knows his views and his comment was meant to support his policy,” the same source said adding that “If some people still believe that Mr. Schaeuble challenged the prime minister, then they should know that Alexis Tsipras replied to Schaeuble’s comment”.
According to government officials, Mr. Tsipras said that if Europe reminds of an ammunition warehouse and some want to get inside with a lit candle, then let’s get the ammunition and light the candle, ie, according to the same source, he told Mr. Schaeuble that he cannot leave Europe in the dark.
