SYRIZA rules out coalition with ND

Cooperation with POTAMI-PASOK a possibility

Olga Gerovasili, spokesperson for Radical Left party SYRIZA categorically ruled out the possibility of a coalition government between her party and center-right conservative main opposition New Democracy after the September 20 elections. “I completely rule out the the cooperation scenario with New Democracy”, said Gerovasili, commenting New Democracy’s  ‘secret yearning’ for a wide coalition of circles that were ‘impinging’ the nation would not happen. She claimed that ‘national understanding’, which has been one of the central themes of opposition leader Evangelos Meimarakis’s campaign so far, would take place under certain preconditions and when there were common strategies and goals. She posed the rhetorical questions of what the positions of the conservative party were on mass lay-offs, the Power supply service (DEI), collective bargains. Gerovasili left an open window to a possible post-election cooperation with the center-left and socialist political parties like PASOK and To Potami (River), who she claimed had closer ideological ties to SYRIZA. “In any case attempts by the old, obsolete, corrupt political system to enter into through the window will fail”, she said.
