An ambitious dam project on the large island of Crete may prove to be the solution for the often chronic water shortages plaguing the cities of Irakleio and Aghios Nikolaos.

Nevertheless, the project generated at least one “casualty”, the village of Sfentyli. Residents watched their beloved village disappear under the rising dam waters.
