Varoufakis: Partners will not abandon Greece

Schauble: Greece could stay without Euro for a short period if it wants

Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis told Reuters that Europe will not abandon Greece. However, the news agency says the rest of Greece’s European partners do not seem to totally agree on Varoufakis’s assessment of their intentions regarding Greece’s fate in the Eurozone.

After a brief account of Varoufakis’s statements in international media outlets about how the institutions were blackmailing the Greek government to sign an agreement, Reuters quotes German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, who spoke to German Bild earlier, saying that even though Greece is undoubtedly a member of the Eurozone, whether it remains one or not depends on the Greek government. “If they leave the Euro, or if they stay without it for a short term is their decision”, said Schauble. He did however make it clear that Germany would not leave Greece to its fate.
