YES vs. NO: Two camps in Greece amid social unrest

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) government has put Greece on a course towards a referendum on July 5. No sooner was the date set that Greeks immediately separated themselves into two camps…

YES, let’s bleed it out in the euro rather than starve in a drachma wasteland…

The “We Stay in Europe” (Menoume Evropi) camp points to generations of Greeks that fought for and achieved Greece’s independence and participation in the European Union. “Today we face huge institutional, political and economic problems Many of us haven’t lived through war, dictatorship or Greece’s efforts to enter the international system,” write the “Yes” supporters on their site, adding that Greeks owe it to previous generations to not endanger all the benefits they secured.

Former prime minister Antonis Samaras: “European identity is an accomplishment of Greece, and New Democracy is clearly sided with democracy and Europe. (Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras brought the country to a total deadlock. Between an unacceptable agreement and a euro exit. The referendum question is effectively a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to Europe.”

The No camp objects to ultimatums and compares Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to dictator Ioannis Metaxas who said no to the Italians on October 28, 1940, essentially marking Greece’s entry to WWII. The supporters of this group believe that Greece’s debt is not viable and want to put an end to the vicious cycle of reforms that have crippled Greece. People who believe that Greece should send a resounding “No” they owe it to previous generations to fight for Greece’s sovereignty.

PM A. Tsipras: “I call on you to decide – with sovereignty and dignity as Greek history demands – whether we should accept the extortionate ultimatum that calls for strict and humiliating austerity without end, and without the prospect of ever standing on our own two feet, socially and financially.”
