Russia to continue support to Assad, says Putin on CBS

International community should help Assad, says Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin told CBS in an interview that he did not plan to send ground troops into Syria at this stage of the conflict. Before Putin leaves for New York to take part in the 70th UN annual Assembly, he called on the international community to coordinate its efforts and support Syrian President Bashar al Assad in his fight against ISIS terrorists. He repeated his view that the only legitimate leader in Syria was Assad, adding that the Syrian army was by extent the only conventional army that fought against terrorist organizations. “Over 2,000 militants from areas of the former-Soviet union are fighting on the side of ISIS. Instead of waiting for them to return we should help Assad deal with them there in Syria”, said Putin.
