Former Prime Minister Costas Simitis will present his new book, entitled “European debt crisis” on 14 May, at the University of Manchester.
The author analyzes the characteristics of the Greek debt and focuses on the reasons it has turned into a problem for the European Union and its integration policies.
Mr. Simitis suggests that the problem was (and remains) the unwillingness of the European elite to elaborate a long-term plan that would be acceptable by both the richest countries in the EU region and the poorer south.
He also argues that fiscal discipline alone cannot be effective. Economic governance and political integration in the direction of sustainable economic development would also be required.
It should be noted that the English language edition is based on the previous book by Simitis entitled “Derailment”, but it is enhanced and enriched with new data which have emerged from 2012 onwards.
