The entire political system waits for the critical signs from the ballots for the first round of elections that will, to a large extend, determine the essential messages for next Sunday and will define future developments in the country, with bated breath.
The hard clash over political stability or government overthrow that the euro-elections of the 25th of May have placed before us casts a heavy shadow on the first round of local elections which is primarily a relentless battle for political impressions, which, depending on which party wins them, will acquire a powerful “card” to play next Sunday, during which the final victor in local elections will be highlighted.
The voting in 325 municipalities, with a flagship battle in Athens, but mainly in the 13 regions where the political clashes are characterized by party politics, may not reveal winners from this first Sunday, but a general estimate is that the political consequences will be drawn from the results of local elections and will echo in European elections.
The listless “muteness” with which, until recently, a large part of the voters faced the electoral process is a phenomenon reflected in the high percentage of undecided voters, as latest polls show, which intensifies the anticipation of politicians and electoral analysts, both of whom recognize the difficulties to make accurate prognoses of both Sundays.
The polarization of the last few days, which most parties resorted to in rallying their supporters hasn’t cleared up the political landscape, and predictions still seem risky as there is a considerable uncertainty about the extent of the involvement of the electorate which will go to the polls.
