17 new metro trains will be available in the next few days. The new trains will serve the needs of the network for the 2 new extensions to Anthoupoli and St. Marina, Athens, and the future expansion to Piraeus.
The new trains have air conditioning, and all the necessary gear in order to be compatible with the technological upgrades that are scheduled to be held in the future on Lines 2 and 3 of the Athens Metro.
Particular emphasis has been given to the energy performance of the new trains, with the main criterion been to minimize energy consumption. That way, the third generation of the trains of Athens Metro will be is eminently friendly for the environment.
Their interiors have also been upgraded, with high aesthetic, and improved comfort for passengers, as well as, better accessibility for people with disabilities. Thus, new wagons will involve a higher structural strength for loads and fatigue, aluminum chassis, more powerful and upgraded braking system and more powerful air conditioning in all cars,will be featured.
Moreover , internal new modern passenger information system with dual LCD screens in each wagon , electronic instead of printed maps over the doors showing the direction of the train and the next stations , cameras outside and inside the train doors Surveillance and indoor indication of malfunctioning port for passengers approaching on time to other ports.
For the safety of passengers, new smoke detection systems have been added inside and outside the train windows and. Finally, emergency passenger escape windows in case of an emergency.
Finaly, the construction of Line 3 extension to Piraeus, ( 7.6 km tunnel and 6 stations) is already in process, as well as, the expansion of the tram from the Peace and Friendship Stadium (SEF) to the center of Piraeus, with a 5.4 km single track and 12 stations.

Is been estimated that the journey from the port of Piraeus to the airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” will be approximately just 45 minutes. What is even more impressive, is that with the completion of the project the traffic in the area will be reduced by approximately 23,000 vehicles per day.
