The Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change, despite the attacks it received because of the abolition of free access to the beach, serving medium and large business interests, prepares to proceed to amendments that will specify and clarify the provisions that were severely criticized without in fact altering the style and content of the project which was given for a public consultation last April.
The staff of the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change will focus on three points wishing to convince the public and the MPs that the extent of the effects of the seashore bill is not so great as those it is said to be.
The first and main point is the surface of Greek seashore which will be given to businesses for exploitation (umbrellas, chairs, etc.) where it provides that 50% of the area of each beach should be free and the access of citizens to sea should not be prevented. The maximum area which can be hired by a business will be up to 500 meters, with the obligation to retain a free zone limited to 70 meters between the concessions.
Changes will be also made to temporary structures that will be allowed in the seashore area.
The third and main point of the bill is the mapping of seashore, which until today was a complicated and complex process and required up to five years to be completed.
Up today only 10% of the seashore has been mapped enhancing the land encroachment cases.
