The unprecedented scenes of violence against the cleaners of the Ministry of Finance, after the Supreme Court’s decision, has been mentioned in the international press causing a stir.
Police forces clashed with the cleaners who were gathered to protest, while photojournalists and cameramen, who were there, were hit too. According to the president of photojournalists Marios Lolos, his colleague Tatiana Bolaris was transferred to the hospital after being kicked on her back by policemen.
At the same time, Hellenic Police has the name of the police officer who appears on a video hitting a cleaner protesting outside the Ministry of Finance.
The video shows the policemen, covered with shields, the cleaner who was hit and the hand of a police officer hitting her on her head.
The sneaky hit
This incident occurred on June 10, when the dismissed cleaners of Finance Ministry, after their protest outside the Supreme Court, continued their protest at the Finance Ministry, disapproving the new minister, Gikas Hardouvelis, too.
Also, a photo showing a police man wearing “metallic” gloves during the episodes outside the Ministry of Finance is posted on the Internet.
Reportedly the man is the squad commander and his gloves seem to have a metal lining.
Hellenic Police investigates the incident to find out when the photo was taken.
New York Times writes about the cleaners
The dismissed cleaners of the Finance Ministry caught the attention of the international press, too. New York Times published an article referring to the painful cuts that weaken citizens and vulnerable groups.
“They are stronger than us, but we are definitely more angry,” said a dismissed cleaner, 53-year-old Despina Costopoulos, to the newspaper who worked in the ministry for 22 consecutive years before being fired last autumn.
The story of the cleaners of the Ministry of Finance, who have become symbols of resistance, is likened to the story of “David and Goliath”…
