Papastathopoulos: Postponing his wedding for the final “8” knockout group might be needed

The precedent was set in 2004 with Takis Fissas, who had to do the same thing

Newsroom June 25 05:41

Sokratis Papastathopoulos is faced with a difficult dilemma, after the Greek national team qualified for the World Cup’s final 16 knockout phase. If our team overcomes Costa Rica, then the Center Back’s wedding will have to be postponed, since it is already planned for the 5th of July, the same day that the match against the winner between the Netherlands-Mexico match. The happiest moment of Sokratis’ life is scheduled for the 5th of July at 19:30 in Cape Sounio’s St. Constantine and Helen church. If Greece qualified, Sokratis will face the problem of telling his fiancee “sorry darling, can we postpone our wedding cause the coach won’t let me come over?”.

From Brazil to Sounio.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos is a starting stopper for the national team and in order for him to be present for his 5th of July wedding is for our team to get knocked out of the match against Costa Rica. The dilemma is clear. The wedding day, versus the dream of any footballer: To win a distinction in a World Cup. It is indicative of the athlete’s mentality that shortly after the big win versus the Ivory Coast, he posted a Facebook message saying: “Congratulations to everyone for the big game. I am very happy to have my name in such a success. I have said so before, and I will continue doing so. When Greeks are united, they can achieve so much. Despite all that we have heard, we proved that my statement is correct. Now, I personally demand of all Greeks to unite as one so that we can keep writing history. We thank you all!”.

The precedent was set in 2004

In 2004, Takis Fissas was facing the same problem. He had planned to marry his beloved on the day of the semi-final versus the Czech Republic. The wedding was postponed, and his comrades had promised him that he would taste champagne from the Euro 2004 trophy “holy grail”. And thus, it turned out to be so.
