Greek Education Minister Andreas Loverdos will meet with Prime Miniser Antonis Samaras and Deputy Prime Minister Evangelos Venizelos to discuss plans to make Greek universities self-financing through research and tuition fees for undergraduate studies in English for foreigners.

The minister has already been in touch with schools of philosophy that responded positively to his request for the establishment of undergraduate departments in English for foreigners. These would be funded by tuition fees that foreign students would need to pay. He plans to have these departments operate in border areas that could attract paying foreign students to Greek universities.

Mr. Loverdos says that private universities can’t be established due to Article 16 of the Constitution. “I don’t know whether we will be able to revise the Constitution, but I do know that we need students to come to Greece,” he says.
