Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades made it clear that a solution to long-standing Cyprus dispute would be a “compromise”. He said that there would be no “winners or losers”. “We should be mature enough and abandon visions that could turn into nightmares,” he said in an interview published in Sunday’s To Vima newspaper.
He says that the only incentive that would have driven Ankara to solve the Cyprus issue would probably be Turkey’s energy needs. He said that a precondition for Turkey to participate in the energy reserves would be to find a solution to the dispute, however he also clarified that Nicosia would “never negotiate its sovereign rights with Ankara”.
Mr. Anastasiades also noted that the Cyprus dispute is also a European problem and thinks it is wrong to leave a solution up to Cyprus alone. He clarified that Greece and Cyprus are united in the diplomatic efforts and stressed that “it would be ungrateful to say the opposite”.
The Cyprus Republic president also said he would meet with U.S. President Barack Obama in the fall.
