Heatwave advice and warnings

Temperatures are expected to climb to 41C and higher by Sunday

Temperatures are expected to climb to 39C today, whereas there are chances that they may climb higher than 41C on Saturday.

Specifically, fair weather is expected in the northern parts of Greece, with temperatures ranging between 18C and 39C. High temperatures are also forecast in the central and the southern parts of the country, with temperatures ranging between 19C and 39C.

The National Meteorological Service (EMY) says taht temperatures will start to drop on Saturday afternoon, aided by northerly winds.

The Health Ministry’s Advice
* avoid going out in the sun
* find a cool and shady place
* wear light-colored and light clothing and have a hat or parasole handy
* avoid hard and tyring physical work
* eat properly and drink lots of water and juices, avoid alcohol and a high-calorie diet
* babies should be given regular showers

High-risk groups
* People aged over 65 should be careful
* People who suffer from chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, diabetes, etc. should be careful
* People who take medicine for chronic illness should seek medical advice regarding alterations to their doses during the heatwave

Air-conditioned centers
The City of Athens is opening six air-conditioned centers on Thursday and Friday to help citizens, especially the elderly, cope with the imminent heatwaves. Friendship Centers would be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
