Archaeologists return to 16th-century Zakynthos shipwreck

The shipwreck that dates back to Philip II of Spain is under investigation

Newsroom September 13 03:48

A shipwreck that dates back to the 16th century was located two kilometers off the port of Zakynthos (Zante) in the Eighties by two local fishermen. The 20-meter-long vessel was studied by Greek archaeologists in cooperation with Oxford University scientists in the Nineties. Part of its hull salvaged from the sea was covered by a geotextile to protect it from further corrosion within a framework of an innovative method created by the Athens’ Technical Educational Institutes (TEI) but research was interrupted.
