Spartathlon is a historic ultra-distance running race that takes place in September every year in Greece and is considered the most difficult ultra-distance race in the world.

The race will take place on September 26 and runners will have to cover a distance of 246 km.

The Spartathlon aims to trace the footsteps of Pheidippides, an ancient Athenian long distance runner, who in 490 BC was sent to Sparta to seek help against the Persians in the Battle of Marathon.

According to the ancient Greek historian Herodotus, he arrived in Sparta the day after his departure from Athens.

The starting line is the Acropolis of Athens and runners run out of Athens toward the coast and along the coast towards Corinth via Elefsina, Megara, and Kineta reaching the Corinth Canal.

Then the race heads toward Ancient Corinth, passes Nemea and Lyrkia and continues south toward Nestani and Tegea, before reaching the finish line in Sparta.
