On bribery for securing 180 MPs needed to vote for a President

Newsroom October 13 06:20

The Supreme Court of Areios Pagos prosecutor, Efterpi Koutzamani ordered an urgent preliminary investigation on SYRIZA spokesman Panos Skourletis’ statements on raising money in order to secure 180 MPs to ultimately elect a President of the Republic from the current Parliament.

Ms. Koutzamani ordered an urgent preliminary investigation on whether the offense of bribery has been committed by anyone.

The mandate of the preliminary investigation was given to Head of the Appeals Court Panagiotis Karagiannis, who in turn will assign it to his Deputy.

SYRIZA spokesman Mr. Skourletis mentioned that, based on a Sunday newspaper report, some MPs have started “raising money” for that specific reason.

Mr. Skourletis’ claim provoked a strong reaction by the Secretary of the Ministry of Development Gerasimos Giakoumatos, who called for “political quackery”, while he asked for the intervention of the prosecutor on the claim, himself.
