British PM helps Nottingham family whose son died on Greek island

UK's prime minister was sensitive to the family's loss, having lost a son himself, and pushed for a court hearing

9-year-old Jamie Leek was killed by a motorbike while on holiday in Zante on 2012. Lydia and Chris Leek were devastated when Greek authorities did not prosecute anyone in connection to the accident even though an inquest in May concluded his death was unlawful. The family contacted British Prime Minister David Cameron, hoping for his help in seeing that justice was served in punishing those guilty for their son’s death and they received a reply. Lydia said that the response was a relief as the couple aren’t “left in limbo anymore.” Thanks to Mr. Cameron’s intervention, a court date has been set.

Spyridon Koklascorr, charged with involuntary manslaughter will appear before three judges on May 12, 2015. The parents of the dead child plan to appear at the trial.

The family were on the island for just two days when the boy was killed on June 5, 2012, on the very date of his ninth birthday.

Mr. Cameron who has also lost a son, Ivan, who had cerebral palsy and epilepsy and died at aged six, wrote: “From my own experience I know the pain of losting a son is something no parent should bear. I am very sorry to hear that the slow pace of the judicial system in Greece has made this even harder and I have looked into what can be done to help. Foreign and Commonwealth Office staff in Zykanthos have now made enquiries with the courts and, exceptionally, have been informed that a trial date has now been set.”

“After the family received the letter I asked my Greek lawyer to look into it and he confirmed that a date had been set and that it appeared it was because of what the Prime Minister had done,” said Costas Andrea, the Leek family’s lawyer.
