Greek teens have sex at 14 years of age

Two studies by Alexandras Hospital and the Athens University Hospital found that Greek teens are having unprotected sex at a young age

Newsroom October 22 11:51

A study by the Pediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology Clinic of Alexandra Hospital has found that Greek teens are not only becoming sexually active by the age of 14 years but are also neglecting to use condoms or other forms of protection for sexually transmitted diseases. The hospital’s research shows that Greek teenagers tend to contract Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) more frequently than their foreign peers though this figure was under the world average just a few years ago.

149 sexually active girls from the ages of 13-19 were studied with 42% testing positive for some form of HPV. Though 78% said they used condoms, only 42% claimed that they steadily used these. “It is possible that they have more than one sexual partner,” said Dr. Lina Michala, the clinic’s director.

The Adolescent Welfare Unit of the Second Pediatric Clinic of the Athens University Hospital also conducted a survey on teenagers sexual practices. 1,538 students from schools across Attica, including Athens, were surveyed and 16% said that they had sexual intercourse with the boy-girl ratio at 3:1. The average age for penetration was 14 years of age where 5.7% claimed to have had intercourse at 12 and 10.2% at 13 years.
