The cost of the floods (video)

Those whose property was damaged by the floods are entitled to funds starting at 586.94 euros per person to be disbursed by the end of the week

Newsroom October 27 07:19

The estimated damage during the floods that swamped Athens on Friday were presented to the Internal Affairs Ministry on Sunday night by the Fire Brigade Deputy Chief Haralambos Afalis. Official documents state that the torrents of rain caused damage to 580 houses and 160 vehicles in 25 municipalities.

An official request is to be sent to Alternate Finance Minister Christos Staikouras on Monday for the release of funds worth 1 million euros so that the damaged areas can start to be restored. Internal Affairs Minister Argyris Dinopoulos said on Sunday that he hopes that funds will be available by the end of the week.

Protothema.gr released a video as to how the flooding began when the Eshatia Stream swelled at the border between the municipalities of Menidi and Liosia. It overflowed its banks in the first thirty minutes of the rain, overflowing its banks and creating a torrent that flooded nearby houses, forcing residents to evacuate.

For people to receive funds worth 586.94 euros they need to fill out an application form from their municipality, have a certificate from the fire brigade detailing the damage to their home, have an official municipality estimate of the damage to be sent to the Ministry of Labor, Social Security and Welfare.

Eligibility to receive from 1,174 euros to 5,869 euros depend on the number of family members, the extent of damage and the size of the damaged home.
