Greek singer Anfisa Vitali sings and plays piano in Kurdistan. She has been living there for the last two years and has become familiar with Kurdish songs that she learnt from a Kurdish Pershmerga fighter before the fighters grabbed world attention for their bravery in fighting against ISIS.
Anfisa’s first recording was titled “Bitter Chocolate” and she met with some success playing with the likes of Demis Roussos, however it was a chance meeting with Drew Goodbread in Iraq in 2012 that caused her to reconsider her life and move to Kurdistan.
After two Greek CDs, she released an English recording with lyrics by Goodbread. “I had no choice but to record the songs in Greece because there aren’t any professional studios here in the region. Also, the music is different and musicians here find it difficult to play,” she said.
