Greece’s wealth gap is the worst in Europe

The government may be celebrating but the Greek world of the wealthy has never before been as far removed as that of the poor

Newsroom November 4 10:32

Frankfurter Rundschau’s report on socioeconomic developments in Greece focuses on the wealth divide in Greece. The article states that Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’ claims of a Greek success story is viewed by most Greeks as sheer mockery following an austerity program that has crushed Greek households. According to the OECD household incomes have decreased by a third and a quarter of the population faces poverty.

The newspaper states that there is a possibility that Greece will return to growth in the second half of 2014 however, after 24 quarters of recession, ordinary people have yet to see the light at the end of the tunnel as unemployment levels are very high, especially amongst youth. The article notes that the OECD estimates that unemployment will remain at these levels in 2015, despite growth. Worst still, the Labor Institute predicts that the 20-22% unemployment figure will remain until 2020.

The article concludes that Greece’s wealth divide is the sharpest in Europe and knows no equal.
