Greek PM critical of Turkey on visit to Cyprus

“Military interventions and threats, supposedly on behalf of the Turkish-Cypriots, do not assist peace efforts,” said Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades

Newsroom November 7 09:29

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras went on a working visit to Cyprus to discuss Greek-Cypriot common policy regarding Turkish actions. Mr. Samaras underlined his opposition to Turkish actions in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) that he considers “provocative”.

“This visit comes at a difficult time, both for Cyprus and the region. Turkey has chosen to act outside the bounds of international law,” said Mr. Samaras during a dinner held in his honor at the Presidential Mansion. “We fully support your decision to suspend the talks until such time as conditions change.”

Mr. Samaras underlined that Greece is a stabilizing factor in the wider East Mediterranean region. He said that he favors collaboration with Egypt for placing EEZ boundaries between Greee, Cyprus and Egypt, a matter that will be discussed in a tripartite meeting in Cairo. The fact that relations between Turkey and Egypt are at a low point helps the Greek side.

Foreign Ministry sources state that Greece is being low-key regarding the Turkish provocations in an effort to defuse tension. Nonetheless, it backs Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades’ decision to suspend peace negotiations amid Turkish violations of its EEZ.
