Outgoing European Council President Herman Van Rompuy was in Athens on Friday to meet with the Minister of Shipping and the Aegean Miltiadis Varvitsiotis. The two men discussed undocumented immigrants entering Greece through sea borders. Mr. Van Rompuy also visited the EU’s border control area and Frontex offices at the ministry. “You are the only Cabinet member I met during my visit to Athens, because I know how you have promoted the specific issue,” Mr. Van Rompuy told Mr. Varvitsiotis. “After what I have heard, I am sure that illegal immigration will constitute a major political issue over the next few years at an EU level.”
