Greek poet Angelos Sikelianos’ house on the isle of Lefkada will not be demolished but will be renovated into a museum so that visitors can learn more about the poet. Lefkada’s Mayor Kostas Drakotaidis signed an agreement with the National Bank of Greece that will sponsor the project. Work begins in a month and the museum will be filled with a number of personal items belonging to the poet.
The poet was born in Lefkada where he spent his childhood. In 1900, he entered the Law School of Athens but did not graduate. Following that he dedicated himself to his poetry. In 1907 he married American born Eva Palmer. They married in America and moved to Athens in 1908.
He died accidentally in Athens from inadvertedly drinking Lysol after requesting Nujol (a medicine) in 1951. He died five days later in July 19 of the same year.
