Thessaloniki’s Mayor Yiannis Boutaris apologized for the vandalism of a Canadian monument at an event marking the official launch of a major new exhibit on ancient Greece that will be heading to the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau next June.
Greece’s officials see the exhibition as a way of improving Greece’s tarnished reputation abroad by drawing attention to Greece’s history as the cradle of Western civilization.
Mayor Boutaris apologized to Canadian ambassador to Greece Robert Peck for the vandalism of the Inukshuk monument for the fourth time this year. “Unfortunately, we have a lot of idiot citizens,” said Mr. Boutaris. “They destroy these monuments and we fix them.”
The monument in question is located at Canada Park that was inaugurated in January to mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and Greece.
