Over 80 human rights activists from Germany are now in Greece for events marking the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The activists gave a small display of what Greeks can expect when they gathered at Golyam Dervent, near the fence of the Bulgarian-Turkish border, on Sunday where they held a protest after their written request for an art performance in the region had been turned down by Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry.

Their protest, aimed to end the deterrance of refugees from entering Bulgaria, saw minor scuffles between the activists and border patrols that held them from getting closer than 300 meters from the fence. “We want to go to the new fence of the EU,” said one activist. The protestors – holding wire-cutting tools – held a minute’s silence in memory of the victims of the Berlin Wall who tried to flee to the West.

The group is now in Greece for a similar “art performance”.
