Scientists are discussing the possible restoration of the Colossus of Rhodes at a special conference in 2015. “We have always considered restoring the Colossus, however it is important to discuss the details of the possible reconstruction with scientists,” said Rhodes Mayor Fotis Chatzidiakos, whose dream is to restore the 33-meter statue.

Up until now the project has never got off the gound, mainly due to funding problems, however Chatzidiakos is willing to push forward, dust it off and carry on with the project that was last abandoned in 2000. “We are in contact with several scientists but the place where the statue will be located has yet to be decided,” he said.

The world’s most famous and distinguished sculptors and architects are excited about meeting the challenge of recreating the work that was destroyed in an earthquake just 66 years after it had been constructed in 292 BC. The attempts to raise it failed and it spent 900 years lying on the side before it was broken to pieces and sold by the Saracens that conquered Rhodes in 654.
