Traffic measures for the November 17 commemoration

Most of the streets in downtown Athens will be closed down at some point today

7,000 police troops have been deployed for the commemoration of the November 17 anniversary. Police forces will be on alert until Tuesday noon. The Athens Polytechnic gates are expected to close at 1 p.m. on Monday for the traditional commemoration of the Athens Polytechnic Student Uprise on November 17, 1973 beginning with the exit of the blood-soaked flag, symbolic of the students who were killed, and rally from the university campus to the American Embassy.

Traffic measures
There have been measures in place from the Athens Polytechnic to nearby Kaningos Square since Saturday. These measures will be expanded to the wider area and will include Alexandras, Patission, Stadiou and Vas. Sofias Avenues. Bus and trolley routes are expected to be modified until early Tuesday.

The Athens metro stations Syntagma, Evangelismos, Megaro Moussikis and Ambelokipi on Monday will be closed after 2 p.m. by order of the police. The Panepistimio station will be closed after noon.

Parking won’t be allowed in the central area from 6 a.m. until midnight whereas many of the roads will be closed due to the rally from 2 p.m. onwards. These include:

* Patission Street (also known as 28th October Street), between Kodriktonos and Panepistimiou streets
* Panepistimiou Street (also known as El. Venizelou Street) as well as all streets running across it
* Omonia Square
* Aiolou Street between Panepistimiou and Stadiou streets
* Stadiou Street
* Syntagma Square
* King George I Street
* Vas. Sofias Avenue between Panepistimiou St. and the Hilton Hotel
* Academias Street
* Gelonos Street, between Dorylaiou and P. Kokkali sts
* P. Kokkali between Gelonos and Vas. Sofias Avenue
* Dorylaiou between P. Kyriakou and Vas. Sofias Avenue
* Amalias Avenue
* Filellinon Street
* Syngrou Avenue between Athanasios Diakou Street and Amalias Avenue
* Pireos Street (also known as P. Tsaldari St.) between Ieras Odou and Omonia Square
* Athinas Street
* Ermou Street, between Athinas and Pireos St.
* Tsoha Street
* Soutsou Street, between Mavili Square and Tsoha Street
* Zaharov Street, between Alexandras Avenue and Vas. Sofias Avenue
* Kifissias Avenue, between Katehaki Avenue and Alexandras Avenue
* Mesogeion Avenue, between Katehaki Avenue and Fidippidou streets
* Feidippidou St, between Mesogeion Avenue and Spyrou Mercouri sts
* Vas. konstandinou Avenue towards Kifissia
* Ardittou Street, headed towards Vas. Konstandinou Avenue
Parking will not be permitted around the American Embassy.
