The Greek police are investigating an incident at Exarheia following the demonstration commemorating the 1973 student uprising against the military junta on November 17. Footage shows the riot police driving through Exarheia, harrassing locals and also appear to beat a kiosk owner and take water from his kiosk without paying. An inquiry has started and the perpetrators seen displaying violence in the video have been found.
At one point, it shows a young man working at the kiosk yelling while the police beat him: “I work here. The kiosk is mine. Are you well? Are you going to steal the water?” He is pushed back into his store and the police leave as he yells. “Where is the money?” Footage shows his kiosk wrecked with goods thrown on the floor following the riot police’s exit.
Sources state that the policemen involved in the violent incident give a different version. They state that they left money but that the kiosk owner didn’t want to serve them. On Wednesday morning, the Police Union’s PR Vice President Stavros Balaskos said that police officers said that they had left the money for the water but the kiosk owner didn’t want to take it. While Mr. Balaskos said that the behavior of the police officers was wrong but the kiosk owner’s refusal to take the money they left behind was also wrong.
