The editors of Time magazine have named the eight finalists for the 2014 Person of the Year issue on Monday.

The shortlist was announced by TIME managing editor on NBC’s Today show. The eight candidates include Russian President Vladimir Putin, singer Taylor Swift as well as groups of individuals, like the protestors in Ferguson.

The selection of the candidates was based on the influence they had on the news within 2014. It should be noted that readers have already made their choice, picking Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in TIME’s online poll.

The 2014 Time Person of the Year will be announced Wednesday.

Tim Cook, who introduced Apple’s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, Apple Watch, and Apple Pay in 2014.

Masoud Barzani, the acting president of the Iraqi Kurdish Region since 2005.

Roger Goodell, the National Football League commissioner.
