Greece is painted red as SYRIZA strides into power

See the strongholds of the political parties of Greece

Newsroom January 26 08:48

COUNTRY

SYRIZA

The anti-austerity Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) won the Greek election, falling 2-seats short of an outright majority to win 149 seats (36.34%) in a 300-seat Parliament. SYRIZA noted increased results around Greece, with the largest percentage increase in Rhodope, a region in East Macedonia and Thrace, where the party increased its percentage point by 28.69% giving the party 48.5% support. Arta, northwestern, Greece also noted an increase by 15% for the anti-austerity party after its charismatic leader Alexis Tsipras ran for the seat. The party also noted 16% rises in Evrytania, Central Greece, and Lasithi, Crete, and 14% in Trikala, northwestern Thessaly.

Mr. Tsipras said: “The verdict of the Greek people renders the troika a thing of the past for our common European framework.”

SYRIZA

Conservative New Democracy (ND)

At 8.53% behind the leading SYRIZA party, outgoing conservative New Democracy Prime Minister Antonis Samaras conceded defeat for his party that gathered 27.81% of the votes. The ND party has increased its quotient in the first and second districtsof Piraeus, Arcadia, the Aegean islands (Cyclades, Dodecanese, Lesvos, Rethymnos, Samos, Chios), Thesprotia and Florina, whereas it has dropped in all other regions. The party gathered 76 seats.

“I am handing over a country that is in the European Union and in the eurozone,” said a grim-looking Mr. Samaras. “We restored Greece’s international credibility.”

Ultranationalist Golden Dawn (Hrysi Avgi)

The nationalist Golden Dawn gathered 6.28% with 17 seats despite its prison leader Nikolaos Michaloliakos being in jail along with over half its MPs. Mr. Michaloliakos, in jail pending trial for participating in a criminal group, sent a message from his cell on Sunday. He said that this was a huge victory for his party hat had “conducted its pre-election campaign via a payphone.”

The group noted increased portions from Grevena, Drama, Evros, the first and second districts of Thessaloniki, Kavala, Kastoria, Kilkis, Lasithi, Pella, Pieria and Rodopi.

Centrist To Potami

The centrist group gathered 6.05% of the vote but also gathered 17 seats.

The Greek Communist Party (KKE)

Greek communists gathered 5.47% of the vote with 15 seats, noting an increase in support in all areas around Greece except from the island of Corfu, Xanthi, Rhodope and Samos where there was a slight drop.
