According to reliable sources, former prime minister Antonis Samaras spoke with EU Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos over the phone on Wednesday and assured him of his support in case the latter is nominated for Greece’s (ceremonial) presidency. No word from the Avramopoulos’ side over what was said or promised.
According to further reports, if PM Alexis Tsipras backs another candidate than Stavros Dimas, then the latter will not submit a candidacy.
If the Prime Minister nominates Avramopoulos, then Samaras will also reportedly give his backing — assuming the EU Commissioner wants to leave the significant portfolio he holds in Brussels to return to … Greek politics.
