Turkey dismissed calls by new Greek PM Alexis Tsipras that it recall a research vessel from Cyprus’ EEZ. The Greek PM supported Cyprus’ position that the vessel Barbaros must leave Cyprus’ EEZ before negotiations between the two communities on the divided island resume.
According to Cypriot media, the Turkish mass daily “Hurriyet” states that Turkish officials underlined that they will not recall the research vessel just because Alexis Tsipras asked for it.
Turkey’s provocative stance follows Monday’s meeting between Greek PM Alexis Tsipras and the President of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiades in Nicosia. The new Greek PM referred to violations of Cypriot EEZ by Turkey, while adding that the Barbaros’ presence is a violation of international law and undermines diplomatic talks.
