Snow returns to Athens

A new wave of adverse weather conditions has hit the country

Newsroom February 18 09:47

Snowfall and low temperatures have returned to Athens on Wednesday, as a new wave of adverse weather conditions has hit the country.

The first snow started to fall yesterday at around midnight in the Attica region, while many residents woke up this morning to a snow-blanketed wonderland.
At the morning of Wednesday it was even snowing in the centre of the city, an extremely rare phenomenon for the Greek capital.

According to the latest updates by the Fire Department no incidents were recorded during the night due to the bad weather in Attica. However, a number of schools, located mainly in the northern suburbs of Athens, will remain closed today, including schools in the areas of Palaia Penteli, Afidnes, Kapandriti, Vilia and Polydendri. Schools in Filis municipality will also not operate today.

In the areas of Nea Penteli and Melissia, the city authorities have decided that the schools will operate as usual.
